If you’re in my paid newsletter plan, you already know about Light Njoy, I wrote an extensive introduction in the latest installment, a couple of days ago. But if you’re not, then I’m happy to let you know that Light Njoy was just approved and it’s live in the AppStore.
What Is Light Njoy?
As you know, I build apps to solve real life problems in my life. I built AI Kiddo to teach my one year old new words in 3 languages, I built MosquiGo to battle the Mekong Delta mosquitoes, Zen Tales to support my Buddhist practice, and so on.
So, what problem in my life do I solve with Light Njoy?
I’m afraid this time I don’t have a very clear answer. But I’ll try my best to explain the reasons.
See, I own an iPhone for more than 15 years, and I’ve been always carrying it around. Most of the time, the phone sits there, and the screen, when it’s not turned off to save battery, always shows the list of my apps. Familiar, but boring. If you think about it, we have this light emitting surface with us for almost the entire duration of the day, yet we’re not doing anything to program it actively. I’m not talking about screensavers, they’re by design static. I’m talking about actively taking advantage of that light surface and made it into something useful. Coding the light.
I told you the answer will be less clear this time.
The 4 Levels of Light Njoy
The first level is just displaying a nice combination of colors, both statically and dynamically.
The static area just splits the iPhone screen in 4 rectangles, and fills them with a few pre-selected palettes that work well together. But that’s all there’s static about it, because the colors themselves start to shift, and this is adjustable with a simple slider. So although it starts with a palette, soon the color “migrate” from one rectangle to another. What’s happening is a little bit more complex than that, but you got the idea.
The dynamic one is even better. The 4 colors palette are now assembled in fluid, gradient blending patterns: aurora (mimicking the North Pole Aurora lights), circle (coming in and blending in a mesmerizing, engulfing movement) and – by far my favorite – the light bulb. This is literally liquid light, making the screen behave like a never ending, hypnotizing and random mix of random shape and colors into random shapes and colors. You really have to see this to understand what I mean. The good news is that all features are accessible in the free plan, just some of them are ad gated (more about this in a minute).
The second level is AI powered images.
Using Apple Intelligence you can generate stunning images from simple prompts, images that will fit your entire screen, edge to edge. Superimposed on these images, the movement in the first layer makes the color travel from one square to another, or make it look like the sun is rolling around, shining and blending everywhere. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, you have access to it, if not, you’ll have to buy a new device.
Furthermore, you can ask Apple Intelligence to just extract the dominant palette from the image it just generated and use it as the color baseline.
The third level is assisted breathing.
This one easy: using one of the pre-defined patterns, we use the circle animation to support various breathing cycles. So, the light is now traveling along with your own breath. There’s also some subtle haptic feedback, to guide you on top of the light changes.
And the fourth level is the most exciting: sharing “njoys”.
After putting together all of the above, I though, what if I can stitch them together in some way? For example, start with a simple static color palette, for 1 minute, then move to bulb for 3 minutes, then fade to black. This looks like a good “go to sleep” supporting session. Or what if I can let my phone aside with a custom aurora palette, for half an hour, while learning something? And slowly, I wanted to be able to save these, so I can reuse them later.
And it was just a matter of time until I wanted to make them shareable. Which I did.
So, Light Njoy, literally lets you share your light. You can create these “njoys” (which are basically JSON files) and then share them with whoever you want. If they have the app, they can import your “njoys” and play them on their device. The AI feature works even better: if you include some step about generating an image with a specific prompt, the image doesn’t get generated, but the prompt does, so the image will be generated on the receiver device (if they have Apple Intelligence) using their own specific constraints.
What’s Free and How Much It Costs?
The first 3 levels in Light Njoy are ad gated, meaning you can unlock them for 10 minutes, with a 2 hours cooldown period. Don’t pay anything, just watch a rewarded ad. The 4th level is partially free, meaning you can import and play other “njoys” but in order to create them, you must buy the app – or become a premium user, as I call it.
It costs $6.99 to do that, and it’s a one time payment. No subscriptions, no hidden fees. You pay once, you get it forever. And it unlocks all the existing features. Every single one of them.
To celebrate the launch, I’m making you an offer you cannot refuse: use code NJOYLIGHT and get 50% off of the premium layer. That means you pay just $2.99 – less than a decent cappuccino, to be honest – and you can start sharing your light.
Like, literally.
