How It Started
I ran ultramarathons for more than ten years — including Ultrabalaton, 220 km around the Hungarian Balaton lake. At some point I shifted down to walking. And honestly, I got a little bit bored with step counts, distance and calories. They're useful, don't get me wrong, but in and by themselves they are just numbers that accumulate.
What if the walk itself had a shape? Not a destination, not a goal — just a form. Something you impose on the streets around you and then go trace with your feet. A square through the neighbourhood, or a spiral through the park, or a heart on Valentine's day just because you can.
Shapes are primitives. If you use the app long enough, they will become your way to write your personal story with your own very steps.
15 Shapes to Walk
Free: Square, Circle, Triangle. Pro: Pentagon, Hexagon, Five-Point Star, Six-Point Star, Figure-8, Arrow, Heart, Diamond, Cross, Spiral, Crescent, and the Letter S. Each shape is hand-tuned to walk between 0.9 and 3 kilometres. Some are a quick stroll. Some are an honest hour of cardio. And you can even edit them to make them last longer, if you want.
The app maps the outline onto your current location, scales it to fit real walking distance, and drops waypoint markers at every corner. Follow the route, feel the haptic at each turn, close the loop. Simple enough that you don't think about it. Specific enough that you always have somewhere to go.
Built for the Outdoors
Most fitness apps are built around the screen. Shape Walk is built around what's outside it. Background GPS tracks you with the screen off — pocket the phone and actually look at where you are. Waypoint haptics tell you when to turn. The map rotates to your heading so orientation is automatic. The app does its job quietly so you can do yours, which is to be outside.
